Frequently Asked Questions

Why ask for tuition?

Most parents are able to help their children with schoolwork, but often find that a child is unwilling to co-operate with a parent and works much better for someone else.

Why does my child need tuition; isn’t school enough?

For many children, for much of the time school is enough. Sometimes, however, a child will find they have a bit of a stumbling block with an area of work and cannot access the one to one help they need. Some find it hard to ask for help, some find that with the best will in the world, school staff simply don’t have enough time to fully address their needs.

At times of extra pressure – KS2 SATS for example, Public Entrance exams or GCSEs, it can help to have some private lessons where problem areas can be worked on, revision done and exam or test technique improved…all of which gives confidence so that a student achieves the best result possible.

Some of our students are from travelling families and need to fill the gaps in their schooling in order to fully access the curriculum and keep up. We are happy to provide lessons for home-educated children if parents feel it necessary to supplement their own teaching.

Does private tuition work?

Yes, it does. The biggest success it brings is increasing each child’s confidence by focusing on their own individual strengths as well as weaknesses and giving them the opportunity to say for themselves what they find difficult. There are no distractions, no other children to disrupt the lesson and no rush to complete work in a given time. A tutor can tailor lessons and tasks to suit each child and has the freedom to adapt or extend work in any way that seems helpful, outside the restrictions of a classroom situation. From a tutor’s point of view, it is a most rewarding and satisfying experience to work with one child at a time and see the progress they make.

Parental input is still vital. It may help to sit in on part of a lesson, particularly at first, so that you know what your tutor is doing and you can also pick up clues and tips from this in order to assist your child with homework and revision.

How much will it cost?

Our fees range from £20 - £25 per hour depending on subject, level, resources involved, distance travelled, and whether the lesson is in our homes or yours.
